RAC Akute on ‘Pad a Girl’ Campaign

Female Students face great challenges in terms of hygiene and sanitation. For girls who are menstruating, these problems compound the difficulties posed by the inability to afford sanitary towels as well as cultural taboos around menstruation. As a result, many girls miss an average four days of school every month which is over a month in a year, meaning they fall behind in class and sometimes drop out of school altogether.
The main problems faced by girls in this community include but not limited to a. The expense of commercial sanitary padsb. Absenteeism where girls stay at home when they are menstruating.c. Unhygienic ways to dry menstrual materialsd. Leakage from poor quality protection materials e. Limited education about the facts of menstruation d. Limited access to guidance and counselling .

The members of the Rotaract Club of Akute, Sponsored by Rotary Club of Akute, Rotary Disrict 9110 Nigeria in a bid to contribute their own quota to the society stormed Asore Grammar School, Akute on the 7th of February 2020 by 10am and sensitized the girls on hygienic ways to take care of themselves while menstruating and went on to give out sanitary pads to the girls of Asore Grammar School. .

We believe with the donation of sanitary pads and sensitisation of hygiene during menstruation many girls will concentrate, complete school and compete favourably amongst their Male peers.

We hope to sustain this project by going further to teach the girls how to make their own sanitary pads with clean, hygienic sanitary materials.
